Special Bugatti Veyrons 2010

Watch out MX-5 and Elise - the Bugatti Veyron is well on its way to becoming the most special editioned car yet. After the Pur Sang, Sang Bleu, Centenaire et al comes this rather shiny and expensive trio.

First up is the Nocturne (main pic). It’s based on the Veyron coupe, with a combination of polished aluminium and a black finish on the outside, and an extravagant interior that boasts a nanocoated magnesium dashboard and galvanised platinum centre console. Obviously.

Five Veyron Nocturnes will be made, and they’re all bound for the Middle East, although its 1.65million euro (£1.5m) pricetag is probably more of a stumbling block than the geography of its sales plan.

It's on display at the Dubai motor show alongside two even more limited edition Veyrons. There’s the Sang d’Argent coupe – silver paint and aluminium outside, quilted and personalised seats inside – and the Soleil de Nuit Grand Sport cabrio, which mixes blue/black paint with mirrored finishes on the exterior and has a contrasting burnt orange interior.

Both are one-offs (although that’s perhaps for the best), priced at around 1.5million euros each (£1.35m). As usual, the changes are cosmetic meaning the Veyron’s ‘regular’ 16-cylinder 8-litre engine remains untouched. With 1000bhp on tap and a 253mph top speed, that’s probably no bad thing…

BMW M1 ConceptThis year's Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este has its public day tomorrow, which is when the world will presumably get its first look at the new BMW M1 concept, a stunning, modern take on Munich's original supercar that is part of Bimmer's 30th anniversary celebration of the classic machine. The private exhibition took place today, however, and the guys at Asphalte.ch -- they were the first with live shots of the Lamborghini LP560-4 earlier this year -- have once again scored a coup, snapping the new, copper-colored M1 concept in all its glory, both alone and alongside its forebears. We expect to have a lot more on this car tomorrow (assuming a press kit will be released sometime overnight), but for now, head to Asphalte.ch to see more shots of the car under the lights. Hey BMW, just pull the trigger and greenlight a production version already, because this thing is awesome.

Ferrari moved on a long way from the F40 in the design of the F50, as the car is built around a carbon fiber composite tub just like the Grand prix cars. There is a tubular sub-frame at the front for the suspension pivots, but the engine is bolted directly to the rear of the tub. The rear suspension is carried on outriggers from the gearbox.

Failed GT racing prototype racer cars

Dauer 962 Le Mans - Built on ex-race 962 chassis, but completely reworked and in many cases even more powerful than in race mode, with 730hp it took the record for fastest road car in the world with 2.6secs 0-100kph and a topspeed of 404kph, but due to legal issues it never was really recognized. Probably my only really dream car.
Donkervoort D8 GT - First coupe version of the Lotus/Caterham Seven ever made!!! Made in aluminium and carbon fiber body with Audi power its a rocket and looks like something out of the terminator. All the pleasure of a 7 without getting a pneumonia.

De Tomaso Mangusta - The devil in the shape of a car. Built to beat the Cobra it remained in the dark although its is capable of matching a Daytona and a Miura in performance. Its a hybrid cuz it matches italian design with US muscle in the form of a 289ci V8 Hi-Po (euro version, US got a detuned 302ci unit)
Ferrari 500 Superfast - A 1960´s monster, it remained the most powerful Ferrari for along time, even when it ceassed to be produced, its V12 spited out 400hp, it had the largest tyres of the time in a road car, it was expensive has a hell, I love it.
Failed GT racing prototype, later sold to special clients, fast has f***, but factory didnt want to waste time, money and effort that could be aplied to Formula 1. One client got his engine upgraded to over 900hp naturaly aspired but forbidden by the factory to race it.

Mercedes to unveil zero-emission sports cars

Mercedes Benz are about to offer the perfect vehicle for people who like their cars to be fast, but at the same time are conscious of the environmental impact they are having by driving them.

A press release issued on Monday announced the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG electric drive; a sports car running on four electric motors producing zero emissions. The car sports a 400-volt liquid-cooled lithium ion battery that is recharged through breaking, but at the same time can power the four motors to produce a 0-62mph time of just 4.0 seconds.

Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said:

With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car … For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance.

The positioning of the electric motors and two transmissions near the wheels, combined with several battery modules positioned along the center of the car, allow the SLS to have a very low center of gravity resulting in a sports car with great handling. The combined power of the motors results in 517bhp and 649lb of torque.

The new car will be unveiled in September at the Franfurt Motor Show along with the new non-electric SLS.


Matthew’s Opinion
I find it hard to believe Mercedes has made such an advance that it can produce a sports car powered by nothing other than electric motors that recharge from breaking alone. I expect further details will reveal a standard engine as a backup and further charging required from the mains between journeys.

Regardless of the questions about recharging though, managing to create a sports car running on electric motors bodes well for the future of zero-emission cars. We just need a better way of powering these cars beyond the lithium ion battery we rely on so heavily today. Replacing that with a fuel cell or similar power source will surely put electric car development into overdrive.

The new Mercedes SLS AMG supercar gets its big unveil at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and it’s set to be quite the technology fest.

As well as a 564bhp 6.2-litre V8 version there’ll be an all-electric SLS. It’s a bold move for Mercedes and AMG, but it doesn’t mean they’re belying their performance focus – power comes courtesy of four electric motors, with 526bhp and 649lb ft on tap. Those figures aren’t far short of the petrol SLS, and with thrust likely to arrive from zero revs, it’ll probably feel more powerful. The 0-62mph dash arrives in the same circa 4sec as the V8.

Those motors are cleverly applied, too. There’s one positioned beside each wheel (rather than in the hubs), reducing unsprung masses. It also means the car’s effectively all-wheel drive, with a transmission at each axle and torque vectoring sending power to the wheels that will use it best. It’ll means the electric SLS could have quite a different character to previous AMGs that send copious amounts of power to the rear wheels.

The 400-volt lithium ion battery is recharged by way of energy recuperation during braking. In its current early stages it’s not known what range will be like, but it’s likely that plugging your SLS into the mains will be another source of recharging.

Dynamics should be pretty sharp, too, with a low centre of gravity achieved by placing the battery and motors very low down in the car. Weight distribution should be fairly close to neutral, too. Impressively, no changes have had to be made to the gullwing car’s aluminium spaceframe chassis to accommodate the new setup.

While the petrol SLS is due next year, expect another few years to pass before the electric version comes to fruition. It could signal a stable future for high power AMGs, though. Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of AMG, said – ‘With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance.’

“It’s the sports car of the future, the way BMW imagines it.” That’s how Adrian van Hooydonk, director of BMW’s group design, describes the “BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics” two-door concept vehicle to be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. Think of it as a showcase of the many fuel-efficient technologies that BMW has in various stages of development. Some of the technologies already appear in production vehicles, while the feasibility of rolling out other systems stretch the future to the point of never.

BMW’s overarching goal was to combine breath-taking speed and groundbreaking efficiency. In the BMW Vision, that boils down to 4.8-second 0-to-60 miles per hour acceleration and 63 mile to the gallon.

First, BMW engineers use the rear-axle to combine a turbo-charged small diesel engine and the mildest forms of hybrid technology. That kind of combo comes standard in BMW 1-series cars in Europe. The Vision's setup is a little more similar to the BMW 320d, also to debut in Frankfurt, which uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel to deliver 162 horsepower, while promising more than 57 miles to the gallon. The BMW Vision takes it a step further by downsizing the engine to a 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engine mated with the more robust hybrid system found in the pricey BMW ActiveHybrid7, expected in the US early next year.

Not satisfied with 162 horsepower, BMW adds a second motor to drive the front wheels exclusively by electricity. When both motors and the diesel engine are called into service, the overall system can put out 356 horsepower. The BMW Vision is lightweight and aerodynamic. The design features an aluminum chassis and suspension, and an outer skin made mostly of polycarbonate glass. The car’s slippery design boasts a drag coefficient of 0.22—beating out the Toyota Prius’s 0.25.

To mitigate the fuel efficiency penalty paid for power, the BMW Vision utilizes plug-in hybrid technology. This is where the Vision becomes more of a fantasy. The combination of diesel and hybrid technologies is widely viewed as cost prohibitive. Adding enough battery power to allow the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics to travel for 30 miles of all-electric drive, as BMW is promising, would send costs through the roof.

BMW also indicates that the Vision only needs a 187-pound 10.8 kWh battery to achieve the 30-mile all-electric goal. To pull that off, the Vision, according to BMW, will discharge the battery pack's capacity by 80 percent, which is likely to significantly reduce the longevity of the battery. (The Chevy Volt will use about 50 percent of its capacity to help ensure a lifetime of use.)

Slipping further into fantasy—of course, the vehicle is mostly eye candy—the BMW Vision’s energy management system uses sensors to anticipate the driver’s needs to adjust engine, motors, electrical components, and even front grille louvers for maximum efficiency and performance. For example, the management system could anticipate traffic congestion ahead to increase regenerative braking or expect a merge on to a highway to let the engine hum and the motors buzz. BMW says the system can even help you more quickly find a parking space.

Audi A4 4 Cars

It may be a late entrant in the Indian Luxury car market but AUDI is making up for that, making rapid moves in one of the fastest growing automobile market. The latest good news coming from Audi India is the launch A4 sedan in July. This new generation A4 was recently launched in Europe and is being brought to India simultaneously. The car will be imported initially but will sport the price tag of a locally assembled car, reason being, Audi will abosrb the price difference till the time it starts assembling the car in India, which would be by this year end. Some commitment this!

“There will be only one price for the A4 in the country. We will absorb the price difference of a CBU (completely built-up) while selling at CKD (completely knocked down) rates since we will be launching the locally assembled A4 by the year end,” Benoit Tiers, managing director, Audi India, said. Audi will assemble the A4 at its plant at Shendra, near Aurangabad. The company had dropped the price of the A6 by Rs 2 lakh after it started assembling it locally.

The company expects to sell 500 units of the new A4 in the first year. While the A4 is currently priced in the Rs 28 lakh to Rs 32 lakh range, A6 is priced in the Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh range. A8, the luxury model, is priced at about Rs 1.25 crore and Audi’s SUV the Q7 costs Rs 52.75 lakh onwards.

In another of its new initiatives, Audi is also launching a roadside assistance program, first of its kind in India from from April 1 onwards. “We are partnering with a specialist company who will pick up the car from anywhere in the country and take it to the nearest dealer, who will then attend to it. Or, a flying technician, either from the dealer or from Audi India, will go to the spot. The aim is to offer the fastest, safest service,” said Mr Tiers. He was in Pune for the inauguration of the company’s fifth showroom here.
